By definition public buildings should be designed to serve the public. Accessibility, ease of use and a high quality of the environment are among the attributes that characterize the best public spaces. Such buildings’ positive contributions to their context are another expected attribute. However, all that is not enough – public buildings should express the best and highest aspirations of the societies that they serve. They are facilities that should both feel part of the urban family as well as ones of which the community can be proud, and by which they are inspired.
