Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre
City of Medicine Hat
Situated in downtown Medicine Hat on the edge of the city's institutional precinct, the Arts and Heritage Centre is the premier cultural facility.
Addressing three objectives, The Esplanade has a significant public presence that is also integrated into the community, contains exceptional design display and performance spaces, and enhances public life and brings layers of meaning to the experience of the city's heritage and arts.
Conceived as an orderly arrangement of large rooms, the centre emphasizes the importance of public space and natural light. The two major components are the 700 seat performing arts theatre and a 2,300 square meter museum/art gallery with archival facilities. A clerestory lantern over the Great Hall brings light to the plan and glows as a beacon; within it is enclosed a helical stair which completes a promenade to the roof terrace, providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
