Student Recreation Centre
University of Western Ontario
Location: London, Ontario, Canada
Client: University of Western Ontario
Completion: February 27th, 2009
The Centre includes a 50 metre pool with bulkheads, 5 gymnasia, 5 squash courts, 18,000-square-feet of fitness and weights space, an existing indoor running track and single pad ice arena, athletics offices, health and wellness café and classroom space.
Consistent with the intention of the Campus master plan, the facility was designed to accommodate pedestrian flow and link service areas and vehicular access from Huron Drive. The facility links to the existing Thompson Arena and steps down an adjacent hill linking to playing fields and the key pathways of student movement on campus.
In addition, the facility utilizes a large double height east/west circulation spine with upper and lower levels overlooking facilities and linking reception, lounges, activities and offices. This linear set of open lounges with adjacent stairs and elevators has been provided to accommodate movement of large amounts of students moving through the building each day.
