Varsity Centre
University of Toronto
Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Client: University of Toronto
Completion: November 5th, 2009
Varsity Centre presents a reworking of a historic stadium complex. Opening to the urban fabric, the stadium unites City and Campus. Responding to Bloor Street, Philosopher's Walk and University Campus, Varsity Centre acts as spatial relief to the active cultural and commercial context.
The 5,000 capacity grandstand sits as an elemental concrete plane, detached and above the horizontals of the playing field and running track, anchored at the south by a dynamic Pavilion which houses stadium facilities. Integrating the historic wall on Bloor, a transparent edge and three plazas connect the community to Varsity life. Under oak canopies, the stadium plaza provides event crush space, while the Devonshire plaza elevates the casual spectator and creates a new urban park. The south entry plaza is announced by an athletically cantilevered zinc canopy and permeable colonnade which physically manifests the connective ambition of Varsity to deliver the student from academia to athletic endeavor.
